How do they work?
When metal braces are first applied, they exert gentle pressure on the teeth, gradually moving them over time. The force applied by the archwire and the brackets encourages the teeth to shift into a more desirable position. The orthodontist adjusts the archwire periodically to keep the pressure consistent, which continues to shift the teeth closer to the desired alignment.
The process of wearing metal braces typically lasts between 12 to 36 months, depending on the complexity of the case. After treatment, retainers are usually required to keep the teeth in their new position.
Metal braces are the most common type of orthodontic treatment used to correct issues with the alignment of the teeth and bite. They consist of three main components:
Brackets: Small metal or ceramic squares that are attached to the front surface of each tooth. These brackets are the foundation of the braces system and are where the archwire is placed.
Archwire: A thin metal wire that runs through the brackets. The archwire is the main component responsible for guiding the teeth into their correct positions. The wire is adjusted during each orthodontic visit to ensure gradual movement of the teeth.
Elastics: Small rubber bands or O-rings that hold the archwire in place within the brackets. These come in various colors and help to apply extra force for certain adjustments, such as correcting bite issues.
While they are the most noticeable option, metal braces are the most reliable and time-tested way to achieve a straight smile.
Highly Effective: Metal braces can treat a wide range of dental issues, including crooked teeth, overbites, underbites, and crowded teeth.
Durable and Strong: Made from high-quality stainless steel, metal braces are sturdy and reliable.
Cost-Effective: Compared to other types of braces (like clear or lingual braces), metal braces are often the most affordable option.
Well-Suited for Complex Cases: Metal braces are ideal for patients with more severe orthodontic issues that require stronger forces to correct.
