Herbst Class II treatment
Treatment with advancement of the lower jaw

An orthodontic Herbst-like appliance is a type of functional appliance used to correct bite issues, specifically in cases of Class II malocclusions (where the upper teeth or jaw are too far forward relative to the lower teeth or jaw). It is often used in growing patients to help guide the growth and development of the jaws and achieve better alignment of the teeth.
Purpose:
The Herbst appliance is designed to advance the lower jaw (mandible) and encourage the upper jaw (maxilla) to grow less. It works by repositioning the mandible forward, which helps to improve the bite and jaw alignment.
It is often used to treat excessive overjet (where the upper teeth stick out too far in front of the lower teeth).
How It Works:
The appliance typically consists of metal rods, bands, and springs that connect the upper and lower teeth and jaws. The mechanism of the appliance moves the lower jaw forward, gradually shifting the bite into a more optimal position.
It is placed permanently, thus it works 24/7, and the patient may experience some initial discomfort as the appliance repositions the jaw.
