Extraoral appliance

What is an extraoral appliance?

It is an orthodontic device that is worn outside the mouth to correct dental and skeletal issues. Unlike traditional braces or intraoral appliances that are worn inside the mouth, extraoral appliances work by applying gentle pressure to the teeth and jaws from outside the mouth, typically using straps, headgear, or facial masks.

Common Types of Extraoral Appliances:

  • Headgear: A type of extraoral appliance that uses straps or bands around the back of the head, often connected to the upper molars. The force applied can restrain the upper jaw growth (in cases of excessive growth of the upper jaw) and the lower jaw growth can catch up for the difference. Headgear is typically used to correct Class II malocclusions (overbite).
  • Reverse headgear or Facial Mask: A device that fits over the face and is worn with straps that apply gentle forward force to the upper jaw (maxilla). It is often used for correcting Class III malocclusion where the lower jaw is too far forward or the upper jaw is too far back.
  • Chin Cup: Similar to a headgear, a chin cup applies force to the chin and lower jaw to control or restrict growth of the lower jaw, particularly in cases of Class III malocclusion.
