Functional appliance treatment

What are functional appliances?

They are orthodontic devices that work by using the forces generated by the muscles of the mouth and jaw (like the tongue, lips, and chewing muscles) to guide the growth of the jaws and the position of the teeth in more favorable positions.

...and how do they work?
Functional appliance treatment

Unlike fixed appliances like braces, functional appliances are often removable, although some may be fixed in place.

The key mechanisms include:

  • Jaw repositioning: Functional appliances gently shift the position of the lower jaw forward (in Class II cases) or backward (in Class III cases) to correct the bite.
  • Growth modification: Functional appliances can encourage or restrict growth in specific areas of the jaw. For example, they might stimulate the lower jaw to grow more or slow down growth in the upper jaw.
  • Tooth movement: The appliance can help move teeth into better positions by applying gentle forces over time.
