Oral hygiene
“Clean teeth means strong teeth and healthy gums”

Oral hygiene is the cornerstone for a successful orthodontic treatment.
Effective brushing is the primary means to keep teeth and gums clean, free from bacteria, and therefore healthy. Additionally, the use of interdental brushes, dental floss where applicable, and mouthwashes form a comprehensive system for effective oral hygiene.
An electric toothbrush is a good alternative if the conventional toothbrush is not sufficient.
Regular brushing
Effective brushing, especially when orthodontic devices (braces) are present, requires time. Two to three minutes (2-3′) is the recommended duration to thoroughly clean all the teeth. Small, gentle circular motions around the neck of the tooth (where the tooth meets the gums) are highly effective in removing food particles and, most importantly, bacterial plaque.
There are two types of mouthwashes: antiseptic mouthwashes, which combat the microbial flora of the mouth and thus its consequences, and fluoride mouthwashes. The latter contain a significant amount of fluoride, which strengthens the enamel of the teeth. This helps “shield” them from microbial attacks and the development of cavities. The selection of the appropriate mouthwash is made by the orthodontist based on the individual needs of each patient.
