Surgical orthodontics
What is surgical orthodontics?

Surgical orthodontics (also know as Orthognathic Surgery) is a specialized branch of orthodontics that involves the use of surgery to correct severe skeletal and dental discrepancies that cannot be treated effectively with braces or other orthodontic appliances alone.
Orthognathic surgery is a procedure aimed at correcting functional and aesthetic issues related to the bones of the jaw and face.
It is typically performed to treat misalignments of the upper and lower jaws that can’t be corrected with braces alone, improving both bite function and facial appearance.
The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and involves repositioning the jaw bones. Recovery time varies but generally includes several weeks of rest and follow-up appointments. Orthognathic surgery is often combined with orthodontic treatment, such as braces, before and after the surgery for optimal results.
Orthognathic surgery is necessary when there are severe skeletal discrepancies that cannot be corrected solely through conventional orthodontic treatment, such as braces. Common cases that require this surgical approach include:
- Prognathism or retrognathism of the upper or lower jaw
- Asymmetric jaw development
- Severe cases of open bite or crossbite
- Difficulties with chewing, speaking, or breathing
- Significant facial disharmony (e.g., syndromic conditions)
- Obstructive sleep apnea
Treatment Process
- Diagnosis and Treatment Planning: The patient undergoes a clinical examination, radiographic imaging, and 3D diagnostic scans. Close collaboration between the orthodontist and oral and maxillofacial surgeon is essential.
- Orthodontic Preparation: Prior to surgery, the patient wears braces to align the teeth properly within each jaw.
- Surgical Procedure: The operation is performed under general anesthesia in a hospital setting and involves repositioning and stabilizing the jaw bones into the correct position.
- Recovery and Follow-Up: Following surgery, the patient is closely monitored and continues orthodontic treatment to finalize tooth alignment and ensure long-term stability of the results.
